Loan Applications and Modifications:
How to Ensure Your Client’s Fair Lending Rights are Preserved

Did you know that mortgage servicing as well as mortgage applications are covered by fair housing and fair lending laws? Learn how to identify fair lending violations in the mortgage application and loan modification process to strengthen your client’s negotiating position with a lender or mortgage servicer. Find out how to refer victims to local and federal agencies.

Veterans and newer professionals with a commitment to fair lending are invited to attend a full-day training session offered by the National Fair Housing Alliance in 15 cities. Registration is free but you must register in advance — attendance is limited to 80 people on a first come, first served basis.

Training participants will each receive a Certificate of Completion.

Session Description: The session will provide an overview of fair lending and equal credit opportunity laws and help participants identify fair housing and fair lending violations in the mortgage application and loss mitigation process. Learn how fair lending laws apply to obtaining a mortgage, resolving a mortgage default and mortgage loan servicing practices and procedures.

Who Should Attend: The trainings are available on a first come, first served basis to employees of fair housing organizations, Fair Housing Assistance Programs, nonprofit housing counseling agencies, consumer protection agencies, disability rights organizations, and local, state and federal agencies.

Training Facility: Fully accessible — see the registration pages for specific cities for additional information.

  Training Program Summary

Welcome to the National Fair Housing Alliance Fair Lending Training Program page. The Training Program is funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under HUD’s Fair Housing Initiatives Program.

The Program will offer on-site and web-based training sessions to 2,000 employees of fair housing organizations, Fair Housing Assistance Programs, nonprofit housing counseling agencies, consumer protection agencies, and local jurisdictions addressing fair housing, fair lending, loan scam and foreclosure prevention issues. Registration is free for all trainings.

For the on-site trainings, participants will incur only travel, hotel and per diem costs (such as for breakfast and lunch).

  On-site Trainings

The curriculum for the full day training is the same for all locations, except for the presentation by a local attorney about the respective state’s foreclosure laws and information from NFHA’s local members regarding complaint referral procedures.

  • Addressing Fair Lending and Fair Housing Issues for Consumers with Limited English Proficiency and Persons with Disabilities
  • Participating in the Analysis of Impediments and Fair Housing Planning Process
  • Promoting Diverse Communities and Developing Successful Affirmative Marketing Plans

Final topics will be developed based on feedback from participants in the other trainings offered through the Fair Lending Training Program.
